The United States Mint introduced the Proof American Gold Eagle Series in 1986 as a collectible version of its popular bullion Gold Eagle Coins. While the 1 oz proof coin was released first, the fractional-ounce options were introduced gradually over the next two years. Today, 1990-P Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1990-P Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin is housed in a protective plastic capsule, presented in a US Mint box with an outer shipper. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included with every coin. These coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and feature the P mint mark.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1990-P Proof American Eagle Gold Coin displays an iconic image of Lady Liberty, originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for the $20 Double Eagle. Liberty strides forward with a torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the U.S. Capitol, sunrays, and a ring of stars in the background. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1990.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1990-P Proof Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin features a design by Miley Busiek. This artwork captures the image of a male bald eagle soaring above a nest where a female eagle and hatchlings are waiting. The design represents strength, unity, and the values of family. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, 10 DOLLARS, and the P mint mark.
History
The Proof Gold Eagles were introduced by the United States Mint over several years. The 1 oz coin debuted in 1986, followed by the 1/2 oz coin in 1987. In 1988, the series was completed with the addition of the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins. Each coin carries a face value in proportion to its weight, with the 1/4 oz coin assigned a $10 (USD) denomination.
