In a rare moment during American Eagle Gold production, mintage figures dipped lower than ever in the early 1990s. Against an improving economy and a robust US Dollar, the 1991 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin emerged as a testament to this era. And now, it’s within your reach through Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Delivered in a protective flip.
  • 6th year of release for American Eagle Gold coins!
  • Limited mintage of only 243,100!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of actual gold content in BU condition.
  • Backed by the US government with a face value of $50 (USD).
  • The obverse presents Augustus Saint-Gaudens iconic Liberty design.
  • The reverse showcases the captivating American bald eagle design from Miley Busiek.

With a strikingly low mintage figure of 243,100 coins, the 1991 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin stands among the scarcest in the 30-year history of this revered coin series. Each coin, in BU condition, displays no signs of wear, yet might bear minor flaws typical of the coining process.

Obverse

The 1991 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin’s obverse features Lady Liberty in her full regalia, holding a torch aloft to light the way and extending an olive branch, a poignant symbol of peace. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, and MCMXCI.

Reverse

Flipping the 1991 Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin reveals the reverse, adorned with a depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles. This stirring design, born in 1986 by Miley Busiek, portrays a male eagle soaring above, guarding the nest and sheltering a group of hatchlings. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.

History

While American Gold Eagles are among the most popular gold bullion coins in the world, there was a time when their popularity saw declining mintages. After over 1.3 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins were produced in 1986, the 1 oz coin saw declining mintages every year until 1997. The 1991 release of the 1 oz coin is among the lowest mintage numbers on record for the series. The American Eagle Gold Coin is the official gold bullion coin of the United States.
