Known for its elegant, consistent and forgery-proof design, the Austrian Philharmonic coin is struck in 24-carat ethically-sourced gold using an environmentally-friendly minting process. It’s one of the world’s most prized gold investment coins and the leading such coin in Europe, providing a secure source of gold bullion for decades. The first thirteen releases in this storied series carried face values in Schilling before the series began to be denominated in Euro, but in either incarnation they have been some of the most reliably abundant and popular investment coins on the market. A beautiful example of the earliest releases is the 1991 Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz Gold Coin, now available for online purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1991 Gold Austrian Philharmonic Coin ships in a plastic flip, with each shipment fully insured against any chance of mishap by the team at Provident Metals. Its face value is backed by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank — of which the Austrian Mint is a division — and certified by the LBMA and the OECD.
Obverse
The famous pipe organ known from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna is featured on the coin’s obverse side, accompanied by the inscriptions “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,” “1 UNZE GOLD 999.9,” “1991” and “2000 SCHILLING.”
Reverse
Eight iconic instruments from the orchestra appear on the coin’s reverse: four violins are arrayed on either side of a cello in the foreground while a Viennese horn, a bassoon and a harp appear behind and above them. They are accompanied by the lettering “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.”
History
Originally struck in 1989, the Austrian Philharmonic coin — also known as the Vienna Philharmonic — is a stable gold investment coin that commemorates Austria’s rich cultural legacy. Specifically, it celebrates the enduring global fame of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: an institution founded in 1842 and identified with leading composers and instrumentalists in multiple eras of European classical music, of which Richard Strauss once said: “All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement.” The coin has been a runaway success and a best-seller in multiple years since its earliest releases, to the point where a stack of all the Austrian Philharmonics ever sold would reach nearly double the height of Mount Everest.
