The Gold Panda Series made its debut from the Chinese Mint in 1982. These coins were originally issued in Troy ounce measurements, a standard that continued until 2015. In 2016, the series switched to Gram-based weights. Each year, collectors look forward to a new design of the Giant Panda on the reverse. Right now, you can get the 1991 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coin with a Small Date engraving from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1991 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coins come in sealed plastic pouches. The Small Date variation means the date was stamped using smaller numbers spaced more closely together. The Chinese Mint announced a total mintage of 36,367 coins for the 1 oz version released in 1991.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1991 Chinese Panda Gold Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a major landmark within Beijings Temple of Heaven. This famous Taoist building has been a part of Chinese architecture since the Ming Dynasty, and its image is a staple on Gold Panda coins.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1991 Panda 1 oz Gold Coin, youll see a calm scene with a panda sitting next to a pond while it eats bamboo. The Gold Panda Series changes the reverse image each year, giving a new look at the pandas natural behavior in its surroundings.
History
Giant Pandas are found in mountain regions across central China, mainly in the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi. These animals live in cool, dense bamboo forests at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. Pandas are specially built for a bamboo-based diet and use a unique bone in their wrists to hold and peel the bamboo they eat.
