Obverse

Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this vision of Liberty depicts her figure in front-facing relief as she walks holding out a torch in her right hand and clutching an olive branch of peace in her left hand. A ring of 50 stars encircles the design field as rays of sunshine emanate from behind her figure.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 1991-P Proof American Eagle Gold Coin includes a design from Miley Busiek. This visual element includes a male eagle flying over the family nest as a female eagle guards the young hatchling within the nest.

History

Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz coins were issued by the Philadelphia Mint with a P mint mark on the obverse from 1988 to 1993. Starting in 1994, the coins were shifted to the current production site at the West Point Mint. These coins are also unique in the series as coming from the Pre-1993 releases, all of which had date marks in Roman numerals rather than Arabic numerals.
