A coin certificated with a high uncirculated grade makes for a valuable addition to any collection. That’s particularly true when the certification comes from the standard-setting brand PCGS, trusted experts in coin grading, authentication, and preservation. Using a certification database to track and confirm its certifications, PCGS ensures that any coin it certifies is a secure investment. For example, a coin with a Proof 69 grade is nearly flawless, with minuscule imperfections that are only visible on close inspection. The 1991-S $1 Proof Mount Rushmore Commemorative Coin is such a coin, featuring the mirrored backgrounds of a proof-quality collectible, and now available for online purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1991-S $1 Proof Mount Rushmore Commemorative Coin comes secure in a plastic slab labeled with its certified grade and carrying the “S” mint mark that verifies it was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Each shipment is fully insured by the Provident Metals team against any chance of loss or damage en route.
Obverse
The iconic Mount Rushmore dominates the obverse side of this coin, showing George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln from left to right. This is accompanied by a decorative fringe of oak leaves below and the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “1991,” “GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
Reverse
The reverse side of the coin features the United States of America’s official seal, superimposed on a map of the North American continent. This is accompanied above by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and below by the inscriptions “SHRINE OF DEMOCRACY,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
History
Famed as the Shrine of Democracy and the largest stone sculpture in the world, Mount Rushmore was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and designed to commemorate the four Presidents whom the artist thought of as having led the nation through its most pivotal historical moments. Chiseled out of South Dakota’s Black Hills starting in 1927, it was completed in 1941 and went on to become a major tourist attraction that draws two million visitors every year. This commemorative coin was issued by the U.S. Mint to celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of this monumental creation.
