Obverse
The obverse design on this coin is stunning, simple and a historic classic. The main image itself was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for gold eagle coins issued in the first few decades of the 20th century. The image was picked for all the gold coins in the modern American Eagle Program, which began in 1986. It shows Liberty walking forward in front of a horizon that’s patterned with sun rays. As she normally does, Liberty carries the torch of enlightenment raised in one hand. In her other, she carries an olive branch to represent peace. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1992.
Reverse
The inscriptions on the reverse of the coin read: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS. Like all gold coins in the American Eagle Program from 1986 through 2020, this 1992 American Eagle Gold Coin features a reverse image by Miley Busiek Frost. It depicts a group of bald eagles. The mother eagle and her young are shown in the nest; the father eagle is shown flying into the nest and carrying an olive branch.

History
The United States Mint launched the modern American Eagle Coin in 1986. Legally, the images it chooses for each type of coin must remain the same for 25 years. The images on this gold coin are the same that are used on gold coins in the program through 2020, when a new reverse image was chosen.
