One of the U.S. Mint’s most anticipated annual releases among collectors is the silver Proof set, a set of five high-quality coins that has been a mainstay of the Mint’s investment coinage for nearly ninety years. With five different denominations, these coins leverage the best in minting technology and represent a high standard of excellence, crafted with hand-chosen planchets, polished dies, and multiple strikes. The result is their signature proof finish, with frosted details rising above mirror-like fields. The year 1992 is a key date for such sets, marking the bicentennial of the Mint with a special Premier set in which all the coins were struck in 90% fine silver. The 1992 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set is available for online purchase from Provident Metals.
The 1992 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set comes in its original-mint Premier packaging: an elegant display and presentation case created in tribute to the U.S. Mint’s bicentennial. This display case may show signs of wear, but the coins within are still in excellent condition.
Obverse & Reverse
Each Premium Proof set is comprised of five coins: the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Each obverse field features a bust of the coin’s eponymous President and shows “1992” as the year of issue. Each reverse field features a unique design, the coin’s face value, and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The U.S. Mint has been issuing Proof coin sets for the collectors’ market for nearly nine decades, but its history of striking proof-quality coins goes back much further, beginning with a fire at the Philadelphia Mint in the year 1817. A disaster with what could be described as a “silver lining,” the fire consumed so much equipment that replacement technology had to be brought in from Europe: more advanced technology, as it turned out, that allowed for the multiple strikes that make proof coinage possible. The Mint’s employees experimented with this technology for years before the results would be commercially released to the public: many of those experiments were kept in Mint Cases and are preserved today in the Smithsonian.
