History

The U.S. Mint has been issuing Proof coin sets for the collectors’ market for nearly nine decades, but its history of striking proof-quality coins goes back much further, beginning with a fire at the Philadelphia Mint in the year 1817. A disaster with what could be described as a “silver lining,” the fire consumed so much equipment that replacement technology had to be brought in from Europe: more advanced technology, as it turned out, that allowed for the multiple strikes that make proof coinage possible. The Mint’s employees experimented with this technology for years before the results would be commercially released to the public: many of those experiments were kept in Mint Cases and are preserved today in the Smithsonian.
