Obverse
The inscriptions ESTADO UNIDOS MEXICANOS, 1 ONZA DE PLATA and LEY 0.999 appear on the obverse of this coin surrounding and integrated into the image of the Mexican national coat of arms. A D-shaped border surrounds the coat of arms, which features an eagle eating a snake. The symbolic images call back to an Aztec legend that indicated the people would understand where to build their city when they found a location where an eagle was eating a snake above a lake.

Reverse
The reverse of this 1993 Proof Mexican Huehueteotl 5 Peso Silver Coin includes the inscriptions 1993 MO, which means Mexico City, HUEHUETEOTL and N$5, which means 5 new pesos. The image on the reverse is of a statue of the Aztec god of fire, Huehueteotl. This god is one of many in the Aztec folklore and is believed in that mythos to be the creator of life. A D-shaped border also makes an appearance on the coin’s reverse, and both sides feature deep cameo designs that bring out visual details.

Packaging
This coin is graded PR69 by the PCGS, which means it’s in near-perfect condition. To protect that condition, it ships in a plastic slab. Near-perfect coins have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary fields. DCAM coins have strong, frosted designs with deeply-mirrored, clear fields.

History
The original design for the Huehueteotl coin was created for proof and bullion coins issued in 1992. This particular coin had an original 100-peso denomination. However, Mexican coin reforms changed the denomination requirements, so when the proof coins were issued in 1993, they were issued with the same design and one minor change: The denomination inscribed on the coin was 5 new pesos.
