Mexico issued three different 1-oz silver coins at the N$5 denomination in 1993, with coins issued as both bullion and proofs. One of those coins was the 1993 Mexican Brasero Efigie 5 Peso 1 oz Silver Coin.

Highlights

  • Coin arrives protected by a plastic slab!
  • 1993 minting date!
  • 2,000-coin mintage makes this coin rare!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Coin carries a face value equal to N$5 issued by Mexico.
  • PCGS gives it a grade of MS70.
  • Obverse depicts the Mexican national coat of arms surrounded by a stylized border.
  • Reverse depicts a brazier effigy of the Aztec god of rain with other decorative elements.

Obverse
The obverse image on the 1993 Mexican Brasero Efigie 5 Peso 1 oz Silver Coin includes the official coat of arms of Mexico. That depicts a Mexican eagle (a golden eagle) on a prickly pear cactus. The eagle is shown eating a rattlesnake, which is actually an important detail because it correlates to Aztec mythology. The legend involved said that the Aztec people would know where their city should be located because they would see an eagle eating a snake. Inscriptions on the obverse side include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, 1 ONZA DE PLATA and LEY 0.999, which indicate United Mexican States and the silver weight and fineness of the coin.

Reverse
A Brasero Efigie is shown on the reverse of the coin. This totem-like carving is an effigy of Tlaloc, the Aztez god of rain. One of the details in the image is the tears shown on Tlaloc’s face. These are important because it was believed that Tlaloc’s tears fell on the fields and regenerated the crops. The inscriptions on the coin include BRASERO EFIGIE, 1993 and N$5. Images on both sides of the coin are surrounded by a D-shaped border made out of small Aztec symbols for hand.

Packaging
Your coin arrives in a protective plastic slab with PCGS labels. The coin is graded MS70 as a flawless Mint State coin that was not circulated.

History
In 1993, Mexico issued a new currency to address issues related to the devaluation of the peso. The old peso (MXP) was made obsolete, and the new peso (N$1) was worth 1,000 of the old. This coin has a denomination of N$5, or 5,000 MXP.
