Proof American Gold Eagles have been issued by the United States Mint since the start of the series in 1986. That first year, only the 1 oz gold coin was released, but over the next two years, the Mint introduced three smaller versions. The only gap in the series came in 2009 due to the Great Recession. Each 1993-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin arrives in a clear capsule and is presented in a U.S. Mint display box. The box is housed inside a themed outer shipper and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. These proof coins are made with frosted design elements and mirrored fields. Gold Eagles are composed of 91.67% gold, with copper and silver added for strength and durability.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1993-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin is a timeless image of Liberty. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the artwork dates back to 1907. It shows Liberty walking forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The rays of the sun shine behind her, and the Capitol building appears in the distance. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1993.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1993-W Proof Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin shows a bald eagle family. This design by Miley Busiek depicts a male eagle flying above the nest, while the female watches over their hatchling below. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.

History

The 1993 release holds a special place in the history of the series. It was the lowest-mintage year for the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle at the time, with just 34,369 coins produced. It was also the final year that the 1 oz and fractional sizes were made at different facilities. While West Point had always produced the 1 oz version, the fractional Proof Eagles were struck in Philadelphia between 1987 and 1993. Starting in 1994, all sizes were produced at the West Point Mint.
