The United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986 with just two gold coin weights: 1 oz and 1/2 oz. Today, you can also get American Eagle Gold Coins in 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz offerings. These two additional fractional weights were added in subsequent years.

American Eagle Gold Coins also come in three different finishes: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. The mint has also added different metals to the lineup as well. Obverse

On the obverse, you will find the image of Lady Liberty as she walks away from the Capitol in Washington D.C. As she walks, the sun hits her back, causing an angelic effect. She carries an olive branch and a flaming torch in her hands. This design was originally created for the Gold Double Eagle Coins in 1907, and it was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Reverse

The reverse displays sculptor Miley Busieks bald eagle family design. This imagery was created in 1986 just for use on these coins. In the design, you will see a male bald eagle returning to his nest with an olive branch clutched between his talons. In the nest, his female mate and hatchling are waiting for him to return.
