Obverse
The obverse side of the 1994 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin includes the third-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Raphael Maklouf in 1985, this image captures the Queen in right-profile wearing the George IV State Diadem, and it was widely used throughout the Commonwealth. Inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1994 Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin displays two kookaburras sitting side by side on a tree branch. These birds take part in unique courtship behaviors, including sharing food, vocalizing together with their iconic laugh, and spreading their wings to display their plumage. These actions help strengthen the bond between the birds before they begin building a nest together. Inscriptions include THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 1 OZ .999 SILVER, and 1994.
History
After pairing, kookaburras often raise their young with help from previous offspring. These helpers contribute by defending the nest, incubating eggs, and feeding chicks. This cooperative family approach creates a tight social group within a territory of 2-4 hectares, where they live and hunt as a unit.
