The U.S. Mint is known for its highly anticipated annual releases of bullion coins for the collectors’ market. Some of the most anticipated of those releases are the sets of silver Proof coins that have been a regular feature of its production since 1936. These pieces represent a high standard of crafting skill and advanced minting technology, made with hand-selected planchets, polished dies, and multiple strikes to create the combination of frosted details and mirror-like fields that identify a proof-quality coin. Premier sets are those in which all the coins are struck in 90% fine silver and that come in a display-style case, as is the case with the 1994 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set now available for online purchase from the team at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Ships in display-type original mint packaging!
  • Issued in 1994 by the U.S. Mint!
  • Each set is comprised of five coins struck in 90% fine silver.
  • Each coin’s face value is backed by the United States government.
  • Coins showcase a beautiful Proof finish.
  • Packaging can show some wear and tear, but the coins are in good condition.

The 1994 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set comes in its original-mint packaging, a presentation case designed to make the coins display-ready as part of your collection on arrival. Some decades after its original release, this packaging can show some signs of wear, but Provident Metals guarantees the good condition of the coins within.

Obverse & Reverse

This Premium Proof set is comprised of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar, five coins in all. Each coin’s obverse field features an effigy of its eponymous President and shows “1994” as the year of issue. Each reverse field features a unique design that includes the coin’s face value and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

History

The history of the U.S. Mint’s proof-quality coinage, and of coin sets like this one, actually started with a fire in 1817. Consuming the equipment at the Philadelphia Mint, the fire made it necessary to acquire new technology from abroad, and the European equipment that replaced it proved advanced enough to support multiple strikes and make it possible to create proof-quality items. Engravers at the Mint couldn’t resist experimenting with this new technology, producing a range of coins simply to test their skills; these items were preserved in Mint Cases and in some cases survived to see public display in the Smithsonian Institute. Eventually, the idea of selling coins to the collectors’ market began to take root, and the tradition of creating coin sets for that purpose launched in 1936, and enduring to this day.
