The Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin was introduced in 1988, two years after the debut of the Proof Eagle Gold Series in 1986. The 1994 release of just over 48,000 coins was the third highest of the 1990s behind only the 1990 and 1991 coins, in order.
