Highlights
Obverse
Lady Liberty has long been associated with the American Eagle Program. She appears on both modern and historic American eagle coins, an appropriately patriotic symbol to match with the bald eagles that tend to grace the other side of the coins. The 1996 American Eagle Gold Coin features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ ideation of Liberty. In his image, she walks boldly forward, the capitol building and rays of sunlight in the background. She holds a torch in a hand that’s raised up; the torch is a symbol of enlightenment and freedom. She holds an olive brancha symbol of peacein her other hand. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read LIBERTY and 1996.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features the national bird of the nation. A male bald eagle is shown flying to his nest with an olive branch in his talons. In the nest, a female bald eagle sits with her young. Inscriptions on the reverse read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS.
Packaging
The coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip, which doubles as a handy storage or display option once you receive it.
History
The modern American Eagle Program was launched in 1986. The Mint chose the images for the gold eagle coins at that time, and the obverse and reverse remained the same on all gold eagle coins minted in this series for 25 years. A new reverse replaced the Miley Busiek Frost image on this coin in 2021, though the Saint-Gaudens’ image remained on the obverse with only some touch-ups to upgrade it.
