The Australian Silver Kookaburra series is one of the Perth Mints most recognized silver coin collections. Since its debut in 1990, this program has introduced a different reverse design every year featuring the kookaburra, one of Australias most iconic birds. Right now, you can purchase the 1996 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1996 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins come packaged inside protective acrylic capsules. Perth Mint issued a maximum of 300,000 coins for this years mintage, with final sales totaling 170,105 coins. The 1996 issue is also remembered as one of the final years to include Raphael Makloufs portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1996 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin, Queen Elizabeth II is shown in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. This design, created by Raphael Maklouf, became well-known for its detailed and dignified depiction of Her Majesty. The inscriptions here read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 1996 Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin presents the bird in full flight, wings outstretched as it glides through the air. Today, the kookaburra is often associated with Australian life and culture and remains a beloved symbol of the countrys natural beauty. Inscriptions here read THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 1 OZ. 999 SILVER, and 1996.
History
For generations, the kookaburra has held an important place in Aboriginal traditions. Known for its distinct call, the bird was believed to announce the coming dawn and drive away unwanted spirits. Many stories from the Dreamtime feature the kookaburra as a wise and helpful figure who brought fire or ended disagreements between animals.
