American Eagle Gold Coins present one of the most iconic coin designs in American history. Some say the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Liberty on these coins is the single-greatest American coin design ever. In either case, it has graced the American Eagle Gold coins since 1986 in bullion, proof, and burnished versions. Provident Metals now happily offers the 1996-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin to you online in perfect condition.
Highlights:
Your purchase of a 1996-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin in this listing comes with a perfect PR70 certification. This indicates that the coin exhibits full, original mint luster and features no detracting flaws of any kind on the elements or surface areas. The included DCAM label stands for deep-cameo. This means the coins have contrasting strong, frosted design elements and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1996 Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this image originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. It features Liberty in front-facing relief with her torch held out in her right hand and a large olive branch grasped in her left hand.
Reverse
The reverse of 1996-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins bears the image of a family of American bald eagles. Created exclusively for this series by Miley Busiek, the design includes a male eagle flying over the nest as a female guards a hatchling within the nest.
History
Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced differently than the bullion versions. While the latter had all four weights available in 1986, the three fractional-ounce proof coins were introduced in 1987 and 1988. The Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin was the first of those fractional-ounce coins and made its debut in 1987.
Ordering
These 1996-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins have a W mint mark from the West Point Mint and ship to you sealed inside of a protective plastic slab. The 1996 release had a mintage of just 35,058, the lowest figure to this date in the series.
