Coin Highlights:
Get your piece of American history by purchasing an American Eagle Gold Coin from the second decade of minting. Each of these coins contains 22-karat gold with small amounts of alloy to make the coins harder and more scratch-resistant.
Obverse
The beautiful Lady Liberty is featured proudly on the obverse of each 1997 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. The image was originally designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins. These coins were only produced from 1907 to 1933.
In the image, Lady Liberty is shown as she strides away from the Capitol building with the sun at her back. Her left hand carries an olive branch. Her right holds a flaming torch. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty and the year of mint 1997.
Reverse
The reverse image is one of a family of bald eagles. The image was designed by Miley Busiek, a sculptor, for these coins in 1986. You will see a male bald eagle clutching an olive branch flying back to his nest, where his mate and hatchlings eagerly await him.
History
In 1986, the United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program with gold and silver bullion options. Today, the coins are available in four different metal types: gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. There are proof and bullion versions available for the coins.
The gold coins also come in fractional weight sizes that are great for those who want gold without the price tag of a whole ounce. The designs differ based on the metal type of the coin, though they all have the same themes.
