Obverse

On the obverse side of all 1997 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Walking Liberty. This design was developed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman as part of a US Mint contest to find designs to replace the Barber Coinage. It features Liberty in left-profile relief walking toward the sun and was used on the US half dollar until 1947.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 1997 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin comes with an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This seal includes the US national shield on the chest of a front-facing American bald eagle. The bird clutches the arrows of war in one talon while holding the olive branch of peace in the other talon. Above its head is a tight, triangular cluster of 13 stars representing the original colonies that formed the USA.

History

As the US economy slowed and markets got shaky in the late 1990s, interest in the American Eagle Silver Coin began to come to life. After setting a series low of just 3.6 million coins sold in 1996, the 1997 coin showed strong gains in jumping nearly 1 million to just under 4.3 million coins. The increase in demand experienced in 1997 was the start of a broader six-year trend of upward demand for the coins that would, temporarily, level off at 10.5 million coins in 2002 before edging much higher in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
