History

After setting a series low of just 3.6 million coins sold in 1996, the 1997 coin showed strong gains in jumping nearly 1 million to just under 4.3 million coins. The increase in demand experienced in 1997 was the start of a broader six-year trend of upward demand for the coins that would, temporarily, level off at 10.5 million coins in 2002 before edging much higher in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
