The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the U.S. and is also prized by collectors of all stripes, but it was a political struggle to create.

President Ronald Reagan first requested that U.S. governmental silver stores be sold in June 1981 to help alleviate the nation’s debt problems. By July, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate had both approved the sale of 75 percent of the nation’s silver stores over a three-year period, but a group of politicians from silver-producing Idaho blocked the measure in October. High political drama ensued, and by December another politician had introduced an amendment to the Defense appropriation bill to put a stop to the sale of silver. This bill was made law and sales of silver came to a sudden halt.

In May 1982, two bills were introduced–one by the same politician who had earlier blocked the sale of silver–to mandate the creation of silver coins for sale, but neither bill was enacted. Legislation was again introduced in 1983, and was again halted. Throughout this time, the price of silver rose and fell with each announcement.

It wasn’t until 1985 that legislation made its way into law to create the American Silver Eagle coins, each bearing the design of the Walking Liberty on the obverse and the heraldic eagle on the reverse.

These 1997 coins are certified as Mint State 69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and contain one ounce of .999 fine silver. Get yours today through Provident Metals’ secure online purchasing system!
