The Perth Mint first launched the Platinum Koala Series in 1988. This series was one of the earliest collections to feature Australias native wildlife with designs that change annually. The Platinum Koala led the way for similar programs, including the Silver Kookaburra and Silver Koala. Right now, 1997 Australian Koala 1 oz Platinum Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1997 Australian Koala 1 oz Platinum Coin ships in a protective plastic capsule. The 1997 release had a maximum mintage of 100,000 coins, with Perth Mint reporting total sales of 41,153 coins. This years release included a wide range of weights, such as 1 kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz coins in addition to the 1 oz platinum option.
Obverse
The obverse of 1997 Australian Koala Platinum Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait was designed by Raphael Maklouf in 1985 and became the third official portrait of the Queen. It depicts Her Majesty wearing the George IV State Diadem. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1997 Koala 1 oz Platinum Coins, there is an image of a koala clinging to a gum tree branch. Koalas need specialized habitats that include interconnected trees for movement, soils that support the right eucalyptus growth, and the right climate conditions for their food trees. The inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA, 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM, and 1997.
History
Koalas live in eucalyptus forests and woodlands along Australias eastern and southeastern coasts, from Queensland down through New South Wales and Victoria to South Australia. They depend on certain eucalyptus species for both food and shelter, with regional populations adjusting to prefer specific varieties among the hundreds available.
