Struck by the West Point Mint, the 1997-W Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin was manufactured with 22 karats of actual gold and features a metal mixture of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. The W mint marking included on one side of the coin indicates that its creation originated from the West Point Mint. History

The American Gold Eagle collection was first introduced in 1987, but it wasnt until 1988 that the 1/10 fractional-weight denomination was first manufactured. This weight denomination was originally produced by the Philadelphia Mint, but this changed after 1993. In 1994, the production of all weight denominations in this series moved to the West Point Mint, where one-ounce coins for this series were already being produced.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1997-W Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin shows the image of Lady Liberty. She strides forward with confidence, grasping an olive branch in one hand and holding up a torch in the other. Sun rays extend out behind her into the sky that help highlight her significance and radiance. This image of Lady Liberty was inspired by the original Double Eagle design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and remains the featured obverse design for this collection.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1997-W Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin is an image of an eagle family, which was created by artist Miley Busiek. In the design, a female eagle sits with her eaglets in the nest, while the male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch in its talons. Certain specs of the coin are also shown on the reverse, including its weight, value, and purity.
