The reverse side of 1997-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins comes with the image of American bald eagles. The design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek specifically for use on this coin. It depicts an image of a male eagle flying over the nest as a female eagle guards over a hatchling in the nest.

Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins were introduced in 1987 by the United States Mint as the first of the three fractional-ounce coins. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins were introduced in 1988 to round out the series.
