Few American coins are more famous internationally than the Double Eagle, a $20 gold piece that circulated primarily for the purpose of international trade between 1907 and 1933. This celebrated design was the work of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and since 1986 has been paid tribute annually by the U.S. Mint’s American Eagle Coin Program. The series combines renditions of the classic designs of Saint-Gaudens with the work of modern medallic artists, as with the 1997-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin.
The 1997-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin features a “W” mint mark that identifies it as one of the strikings produced at the West Point Mint facility. Its high-quality proof finish preserves the coin’s full, original luster with a surface free from blemishes. Every shipment is fully insured by Provident Metals and arrives in secure box packaging, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin’s obverse side features a careful reproduction of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design. She’s pictured with flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right hand, accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1994.”
The coin’s reverse side features a male eagle flying back to the nest bearing an olive branch, and his mate in the nest below protecting her hatchlings. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with the “W” mint mark.
The American Eagle Coin Program is noted for its faithful reproduction of the original artwork of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, set alongside the work of prestigious modern metallic artists such as, in this case, Miley Busiek. Coins in the series that were struck at the West Point Mint have their own following among collectors and investors, but every entry in the series is sought-after for its durability and beauty. These are coins that truly live up to the subject they celebrate.
