Designed by Miley Busiek in 1986 for this series, the image shows a male eagle flying above the family nest as a female eagle guards the hatchlings in the nest. History

The mintage increases in the 1/4 oz gold coin in the American Eagle Series in the late 1990s were the largest year-over-year increases in the history of this weight. While the 1996 to 1997 increase has been matched or slightly edged several times, the jump from 1997 to 1998 remains the second-highest increase from one year to the next in the series. The largest year-over-year increase in this weight came from 1998 to 1999 when mintage grew by almost 260,000 coins.
