The American Eagle Series from the United States Mint comes with an investment-grade coin and two collectible versions. The 1/4 oz gold coin is available in the BU American Eagle and Proof American Eagle collections, with demand ebbing and flowing with market factors. The late 1990s saw one of the wildest rides the American Eagle Gold Coin Series has ever seen. Right now, you can buy 1998 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of 1998 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals, you will receive individual coins in protective plastic flips. The mintage of 309,829 coins in the 1/4 oz weight in 1998 remains the third-highest mintage in the history of the series and is behind only the 1986 coin, the highest, and the 1999 coin.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of 1998 American Eagle Gold Coins and this visual was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image shows Liberty in full-length relief as she walks toward the viewer. She holds up a torch in her right hand to light the way and carries an olive branch to mark a desire for peace. The background field includes the U.S. Capitol Building, sun rays on the horizon, and a ring of 50 stars around the design element. The inscriptions include only LIBERTY and 1998.
Reverse
American bald eagles are featured in the reverse design of the 1998 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins. Designed by Miley Busiek in 1986 for this series, the image shows a male eagle flying above the family nest as a female eagle guards the hatchlings in the nest. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.
History
The mintage increases in the 1/4 oz gold coin in the American Eagle Series in the late 1990s were the largest year-over-year increases in the history of this weight. While the 1996 to 1997 increase has been matched or slightly edged several times, the jump from 1997 to 1998 remains the second-highest increase from one year to the next in the series. The largest year-over-year increase in this weight came from 1998 to 1999 when mintage grew by almost 260,000 coins.
