The Chinese Gold Panda Series has been a yearly release from the Chinese Mint since 1982. It was originally available in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. In 1983, a 1/20 oz coin was added to the collection. One of the most recognized features of this series is its rotating panda artwork, which changes each year on the reverse side. Provident Metals now offers the 1998 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin, featuring the Small Date variety.
Highlights:
This 1998 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin ships in protective plastic and is identified as a Small Date coin. This means the engraved year on the coin appears in a smaller font than other versions from the same year.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1998 Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This iconic round structure is part of Beijings Temple of Heaven complex, a site built during the Ming Dynasty for ceremonial use. The coin also includes details such as the steps leading up to the entrance of the building.
Reverse
Flipping to the reverse of 1998 Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coins, you’ll see a Giant Panda reclining on a rock, holding bamboo shoots. Though pandas are classified as carnivores, they survive almost entirely on bamboo. Since bamboo provides limited nutrition, pandas need to consume large amounts dailysometimes up to 40 poundsto maintain their energy.
History
To help manage their bamboo-based diet, pandas have developed helpful physical traits. These include a wrist bone that acts much like a thumb, allowing them to grip bamboo, as well as strong jaws and broad molars suited for chewing tough plant fibers. However, they still only absorb about 20% of the nutrients from the food they eat.
