The Chinese Gold Panda series began in 1982 and has been a regular part of the precious metals market ever since. When first released, the series included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, with the 1/20 oz size added a year later in 1983. One of the most recognizable aspects of this program is its use of new Giant Panda imagery each year. Right now, you can purchase 1998 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 17th year for the Gold Panda Series!
  • Small Date specimens!
  • Limited mintage of only 4,168 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 50 Yuan by China.

Each 1998 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin available here comes sealed in a plastic pouch. These are Small Date examples, meaning the numbers in the date are more compact and rounded. Only 4,168 of these coins were made by the Chinese Mint.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 1998 Chinese Panda Gold Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a structure located within Beijings Temple of Heaven. This design has appeared on all Gold Panda Coins since the program launched and depicts the outside of the building in great detail.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1998 Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin, the years unique panda artwork features a Giant Panda seated on a rock ledge. A bamboo branch is held in one paw, and more bamboo appears in the background. Although pandas are technically classified as carnivores, their diet is made up almost entirely of bamboo.

History

Sometimes, pandas may eat other types of vegetation or small animals, but bamboo remains their primary food source. However, because their bodies arent well adapted to digesting plants, they absorb only a fraction of the nutrients in their diet. This results in lower energy and reduced reproduction rates compared to other bears.
