Obverse

The image of Lady Liberty from the $20 Gold Double Eagle features on the obverse of 1998-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this vision of Liberty in front-facing relief depicts her as she walks away from Washington D.C. with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand.

Reverse

In the reverse imagery of 1998 Proof American Eagle Gold Coins, the US Mint uses an exclusive design from Miley Busiek. In this depiction, a male bald eagle flies over the family nest as a female is perched within the nest watching over a young hatchling.

History

The Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin was one of the last two weights introduced in the collection. The 1 oz coin debuted in 1986, the 1/2 oz coin in 1987, and the 1/4 oz along with the 1/10 oz coin in 1988. While the Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin has not proven as popular as its bullion counterpart, it still proves top among the four proof weights in most years. In 1998, in particular, this weight was the highest minted of the four at 39,395 coins. That is more than 10,000 coins more than the next closest weight.
