History

The American Gold Eagle Coin collection enters its twelfth year with this release for 1998. Since the collection first began, the 1 oz weight has been produced by the West Point branch of the United States Mint. Fractional weights in the series were initially produced by the Philadelphia Mint, but following 1993, these transitioned to the West Point Mint as well.

Obverse

A detailed design of Lady Liberty is seen on the obverse of the 1998-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin. This image was originally designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and is taken from his Double-Eagle design. Its been the exclusive obverse design since the beginning of the series. In the image, Lady Liberty is shown walking forward with both arms outstretched. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1998-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin shows a design created by artist Miley Busiek. The illustration includes a family of eagles, where the male eagle flies overhead and the female eagle sits waiting in the nest with her eaglets. In his talons, the male eagle carries an olive branch.
