Reverse

The reverse of the 1999 Australian Lunar Rabbit Silver Coin depicts the Chinese Lunar Rabbit design, with the rabbit standing in a grassy nature scene. Various inscriptions surround the central image, indicating the coin’s year, weight, purity, and the Chinese symbol for “Rabbit.” The P100 privy mark is also included, commemorating the centennial anniversary of the Perth Mint’s founding in 1899. Inscriptions include 1999, P100, and 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER.

History

While the Lunar Series kicked off in 1996 with gold bullion versions, it wasn’t until 3 years later in 1999 that collectors could get their hands on silver commodities as well. The Year of the Rabbit inauguration saw a total of 5 different weight choices issued, ranging from this 1/2 oz all the way up to a hefty 1 kilo size. Subsequent Lunar Series II and III followed in 2008 and 2020 respectively.
