When you purchase the 1999 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin online in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive coins that are housed in individual plastic flips. In 1999, the Canadian Maple Leaf reached its second-highest mintage for the decade, coming in behind only the 1990 release of the coins. The uptick in demand at this point was the result of the Y2K crisis and the ensuing economic downturn it created.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1999 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin comes with a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This is the third-generation portrait of the Queen to appear on Canadian coinage and was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt in 1990. This effigy was the first ever designed by a Canadian artist. Inscriptions include 50 DOLLARS, ELIZABETH II, and 1999.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1999 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins, you will find the iconic sugar maple leaf. The national emblem of Canada, this design shows a sugar maple leaf with brilliant, natural details. This visual was designed by Walter Ott and the field includes inscriptions of CANADA, 9999, and FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins enjoyed a resurgence in demand through the last several years of the 1990s. This was driven by an economic downturn that was rooted in concerns over the Y2K crisis. While the Maple Leaf Gold Coins rebounded to levels not seen since 1990, it would prove short-lived as mintage dropped to an all-time low in the series just one year after the release of these 1999 coins.
