Highlights:
At a total mintage of 549,796 coins, the 1999 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin posted the highest mintage in the series since 1990 and marked just the fourth coin in the 1990s to surpass 500,000 in mintage. However, moving forward, the Proof American Eagle Silver Coin would see sustained demand at a much higher level into the 2000s and 2010s. In fact, no Proof American Eagle Silver Coin would dip below the 1999 mintage mark until the release of the 2017 coin sold just 400,287.
Obverse
Walking Liberty graces the obverse of 1999-P Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. This design from Adolph A. Weinman was created in 1916 for the United States Mint. It shows Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun cresting a mountain peak in the distance. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 1999.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse field of 1999-P Proof American Eagle Silver Coins. The modern version of this seal was created in 1986 by John Mercanti. It depicts a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest and a triangular cluster of 13 stars above its head. The bird clutches the arrows of war and olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1 oz Fine Silver One Dollar, and the P mintmark of the Philadelphia Mint.
History
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins have been struck by three of the four branch facilities of the United States Mint to date. The San Francisco Mint first issued the coins with an S mintmark from 1986 to 1992. The Philadelphia Mint took over in 1993, striking the coins through 2000 with a P mintmark. As of 2001, the West Point Mint has been the primary issuer of the coins with the W mintmark included.
