In 1999, the United States Mint issued the first of five designs in the State Quarters Program. These coins were circulating, commemorative quarters with the standard US cupro-nickel alloy of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. The coins became immensely popular with collectors and even generated enough interest to bring new generations into the fold when it came to coin collecting.

Designs

On the obverse of coins in the 1999 US Mint Proof Quarters Set, you will find John Flanagans portrait of President George Washington in left-profile relief. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. The reverse of the coins features varying designs honoring each state.

History

The State Quarters Program was so popular with Americans that it generated two follow-up collections. In 2009, a one-year District of Columbia and US Territories Program issued circulation quarters with designs for Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. After both of these came the America the Beautiful Series in 2010. This collection featured 5 oz silver bullion coins and circulation quarters.
