US Pennies have been issued from 1793 by the United States Mint, but it wasnt until 1864 that a penny similar to the one now in denomination came into being. That year, the US Mint finally solidified the weight and metallic content of the penny at 3.11 Grams in weight with 95% copper and 5% zinc. The only exception to the metal content in this time was 1943 when the Steel Cent was issued to consider zinc and copper for the war effort.
