The $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle features a Native American wearing an intricate feather headdress. He is surrounded by thirteen stars (meant to symbolize the original 13 colonies), along with the coin’s date and the word “LIBERTY.” Like the reverse, the obverse of the $2.50 Indian piece is engraved in an incuse format. This means that the design details are recessed or sunken.
In the center of the reverse, an eagle is shown sitting on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch in its talons. Encircling the bird are the country of origin, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the coin’s denomination of $2.50 US dollars, and the legend “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” As is the case with the obverse, the reverse features incused design elements.
The $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle is one of America’s most beloved coins thanks to its beautiful design and unique format. Along with the $5 Indian Half Eagle, which shares a similar motif, it is one of two incuse coins in American numismatic history. The coin was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who admired the famous sculptor’s creativity. Much like the $10 Indian and $20 “Saint,” Pratt strived to make the $2.50 Indian a truly unusual coin unlike any other previously made by the U.S. Mint.
These $2.50 Indians are “low premium” examples, which means they may be cleaned, worn, and/or scratched. However, they retain their full metal content (0.1209 oz fine gold) and all major design details are fully intact. Low premium specimens like this are the most cost-effective way to own $2.50 Indian gold coins. They provide collectors and investors with the opportunity to own a classic American gold coin for just a small amount over melt value.

meant a lot of these were simply lost, i.e. falling out of your pocket & not
even knowing it based on there size. Not like, say a peace dollar falling out
of your pocket. I mean it is an excellent piece to add to most any collection.
But if you dropped one of these, & unless you knew it right away, it was probably
gone forever."
