Obverse

On the obverse side of $2 American Civil War Legal Tender Notes there is an illustrated image of the Battle of Gettysburg. In a wide, highly detailed shot, we see both Union and Confederate soldiers attacking each other. On the right and left side of the image are portraits of General Lee and General Meade, respectively. Written on the obverse are the words The American Civil War, Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863.

Reverse

The reverse of $2 Battle of Gettysburg Legal Tender Notes contains a replication of John Trumbulls 1818 painting Declaration of Independence. While some claim this image depicts the signing of the Declaration, in reality, Trumbull intended it to show the Founding Fathers presenting a draft of the document to John Hancock. This historical moment occurred on June 28th, 1776. The following week, the document was signed on July 4th.

History

The Union triumph at the Battle of Gettysburg paved the way for their ultimate victory in the Civil War. However, the battle today is looked upon through a somber lens, as the outcome will never overshadow the estimated 50,000 casualties that suffered in what is considered the wars most violent event. On November 19th, 1863, there was a dedication held at the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where the bodies of fallen Union soldiers were laid to rest. On that day, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his legendary Gettysburg Address.
