Design

The 2 Gold Florida Goldback Note showcases a beautiful design of a tribal woman paddling her dugout canoe through a Florida estuary or swamp. Her village can be seen in the background, while a manatee glides under the water below her boat.

History

In 1513, Spanish explorers arrived in Florida, encountering several sophisticated Indigenous tribes. The Calusa, a prominent group along the Gulf Coast, were known for their impressive engineering, building canal systems and artificial islands from shells and clay. Renowned as skilled seafarers and fishermen, the Calusa resisted Spanish colonization, preserving their traditions and societal structure for far longer than most other tribes in the region.
