History

When you think of the Lincoln Memorial, the white pillars and the giant statue first come to mind. But this historic monument is full of other rich details, as well. This includes the symbolic meaning behind the columns holding up the structure. There are 36 columns in total to represent the number of states in existence when Lincoln was president. Without these columns, the structure could not stand. Similarly, without the states, the country could not stand, either. The exterior was designed by architect Henry Bacon, who even went so far as to employ different types of stone for different parts of the structure. This reinforced the message of the important distinctive qualities different states had for President Lincoln.
