The United States Mint first released the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. After this point, it was in circulation until 1938. The design by James Earle Fraser is iconic, and many Americans know it as the Indian Nickel. These coins were released during President William Howard Tafts time in office and were released through President Theodore Roosevelts terms. Right now, you can purchase the 2 oz Silver Buffalo Round at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Coin designs were replaced by the United States government in 1911. All of the coins designed by US Mint engravers Charles E. Barber were set to be replaced with fresh designs. The Buffalo Nickel was one of the new designs created in this push.
Obverse
On the obverse of each round, you will see the image of a strong indigenous tribal figure. In the image, you will see the Native American mans long hair laced with feathers. Other engravings on this side of the round include the word Liberty, and the year 1913. The F engraving is there to honor the designer as it is his last initial.
Reverse
The reverse side of each 2 oz Silver Buffalo Round features the same design that you would find on the Buffalo Nickel Coins. The image is that of an American bison in left-profile as it stands atop a small dirt mound. On this side of the round, you will see engravings including the name of the country the original coins and the weight, purity, and metal content of these rounds. You can also find the Intaglio Mint mark.
History
Intaglio Mint is a private minting facility in the United States. This small mint creates unique designs with its three-man team of devoted numismatists. These rounds are part of the Modern Tribute Series that honors various historical coin designs.
