The first written record of Osiris in Ancient Egypt comes from the Fifth Dynasty around the 25th century BCE. However, he was often associated with an epithet for the land of the dead, Khenti-Amentiu. This term often translates as Foremost of the Westerners, with the Egyptian language using the term westerners to refer to those from the land of the dead. The term Khenti-Amentiu dates to the First Dynasty in the 34th century BCE, giving rise to the belief that Osiris could have been worshiped as early as the First Dynasty.

Obverse

The obverse face of the 2 oz Silver Egyptian Gods Osiris Round features an image of the partially mummified body of Osiris. He was wrapped up to the mid-torso by Isis after she collected his dismembered body parts from the Nile River. She used a magical ceremony to bring him back to life, though the process proved temporary. He is shown here with his arms crossed as he holds the crook and flail, and wears the Atef crown on his head. The only inscription on this side is the cartouche from Egyptian hieroglyphs that depicts his name.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 2 oz Silver Egyptian Gods Osiris Rounds, you will find a pyramid tomb in the background field with the mummified body of Osiris in the foreground. There are four clay pots at his feet that hold vital organs from his body that were removed during the mummification process. There is an inscription beneath his feet of 2 oz, Ag, 999.

History

Because of the mythology surrounding Osiris and his mummification by Isis, he became one of the first gods of Ancient Egypt associated with the practice of mummification. The pharaohs of Egypt would be mummified after death in the belief that they would pass on to the afterlife and join the god Osiris.
