As part of the Colonial Tribute Series from Intaglio Mint, the 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round features the original design of the Silver Shilling used in the 1770s. During British rule, only one of the colonies was permitted to use its own currency. Today, the 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round is available from Provident Metals.
During the British reign over North American land, Virginia was the only colony that was allowed to produce its own coinage. The 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round reflects the actual design featured on the Virginia Shilling. First introduced in 1774, the Silver Shilling followed the copper halfpenny, which was also widely circulated. Individual orders of the 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round are shipped within protective plastic to ensure the flips stay in brand new condition.
On the obverse of the 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round is a right-profile bust of King George III who was the reigning British King during the North American occupation. This design was based on the gold guineas coin distributed by the British crown from 1613 to 1814. Throughout King George IIIs long reign, he had various portraits features on the gold guineas, similar to the one found on this round.
The reverse of the 2 oz Silver Virginia Shilling Round showcases a coat of arms that was actually never found on the gold guineas coinage. The Virginia Shillings were issued with the Crowns Arms of Virginia, rather than the royal arms of the British Monarch.
Intaglio Mint oversees the production of the Colonial Tributes Series. Located in Waco, Texas, the small, private mint was founded in 2010. Mark Bogani established the private mint and now only operates with two other coin designers, Timothy Grat and Anthony Grat. Since the mint first began production, Intaglio Mint has focused on creating unique, collectible precious metal products.
