Obverse

A collection of Pearl Harbor images from the day of the attack are shown on the obverse of $2 World War II Legal Tender Notes. These images have been applied behind the standard Thomas Jefferson portrait found on the $2 bill. Also included are inscriptions that read Attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, WWII.

Reverse

A rendition of the 1818 oil painting known as Declaration of Independence is featured on the reverse side of the World War II Attack on Pearl Harbor Legal Tender Note. The original artist John Trumbull confided with Thomas Jefferson on the design and then spent nearly three decades completing what would be considered his masterpiece. The image depicts Jefferson and other Founding Fathers presenting a draft of the Declaration to John Hancock. This image has been featured on all $2 bills since the note was re-introduced in 1976.

History

While Japan succeeded in surprising America with its Pearl Harbor attack and managed to cause significant death and destruction, the plan ultimately backfired. They hoped to cripple U.S military power, and yet they failed to destroy their enemys most crucial weapon: the Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers. It just so happened that on December 7th, the Fleet was away delivering planes to troops on other islands. While the event was a tragedy, especially considering the loss of life, it also provided the U.S with incredible resolve and determination, which ultimately played an enormous role in the victory of the Allied Forces.
