The D-Day landings, also called Operation Overlord, happened on June 6, 1944, and were a crucial moment in World War II. This massive Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France was the largest amphibious operation ever, with soldiers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations involved. To mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in 2024, Merrick Mint created these $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Notes, now available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each $2 World War II D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Note is packaged in a blue presentation folio, making it an excellent addition to any collection. The note maintains its traditional reverse design, while the obverse is enhanced with colorized, photorealistic scenes of Allied troops landing at Normandy.
Obverse
On the obverse of the $2 D-Day Normandy Landings Legal Tender Note, youll find President Thomas Jefferson at the center, with the background on either side showing scenes from the D-Day landings. The invasion targeted five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Omaha Beach saw some of the fiercest fighting, with Allied forces encountering strong resistance from German troops who had fortified the area as part of the “Atlantic Wall.”
Reverse
The reverse of the note features John Trumbulls famous painting from 1818, the Declaration of Independence. This artwork is prominently displayed on the reverse side of the U.S. $2 bill, depicting the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on June 28, 1776, with 42 of the 56 signers shown.
History
In the days and weeks following D-Day, the Allies continued to pour men and materials into Normandy, expanding their foothold and pushing inland. The German forces, caught off guard by the location and scale of the invasion, struggled to mount an effective counterattack. This allowed the Allies to break out of Normandy and begin the liberation of France.
