With the formation of a unified Kingdom of Italy in 1861, the Italian lira was born. These gold coins would go on to become one of the most widely circulated forms of coinage in Europe throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In fact, the coins remained in circulation until the 1920s, one of the few European gold coins still issued after World War I. Provident Metals now has NGC certified 20 and 10 Lire Italian Gold 2-Coin Sets available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you buy the 20 and 10 Lire Italian Gold 2-Coin Set available in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin set that includes a 20 Lire and 10 Lire Italian Gold Coin. Both coins have earned Mint State 62 grades from the NGC. Coins with this grade have impaired or dull mint luster, various contact marks throughout the primary and secondary fields of the coin, and visible hairlines. Please bear in mind that the date marks on these coins will vary and that we are unable to guarantee a specific date and corresponding design. You will, however, not receive matching date marks on the two coins.
Obverse
For the obverse design of the coins in the 20 and 10 Lire Italian Gold 2-Coin Set, you will find a portrait of the King of Italy that matches the date mark on the coin. King Victor Emmanuel II was the first King of Italy and his portrait is found on coins dated 1861 to 1878. From late 1878 to 1900, the coins were issued with a portrait of King Umberto I. The final coins issued in the series bore the portrait of King Victor Emmanuel III who reigned from 1900 to 1946. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include the name of the reigning monarch and the date mark.
Reverse
In the reverse field of 20 and 10 Lire Italian Gold Coins in this 2-Coin Set, the design element includes the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Italy. Both seals are the same and feature a quartered shield with a crown at the top. There is a wreath flanking the design on both coins. However, the 10 Lire coins have an inscription of REGNO DITALIA, while the 20 Lire coin does not. Both coins have a face value noted.
History
The Italian lira debuted as a coin for the unified Kingdom of Italy when King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia unified the various kingdoms on the Italian peninsula under his rule. Sardinia had already been using a currency known as the lira.
