The Austro-Hungarian Empire was the third-largest empire in Europe in the 19^th and 20^th centuries in terms of size, behind only the British Empire and the Russian Empire. It was one of the most powerful industrial empires on the continent and was ruled throughout the entirety of its existence by Franz Joseph I, the reigning Emperor of Austria who became King of Hungary as well when the kingdoms merged to form the joint empire.

History

The Austro-Hungarian Empire adopted the gold standard in 1892 and began to issue the 20 Corona Austrian Gold Coin at that time. The coins were issued for circulation through 1916 when World War I made it impossible to continue coining gold coins. Please note that restrikes of this popular design and denomination were produced by the Austrian Mint, but none of the coins available in this listing come from the restrike period.
