The Helvetia design from the Swiss Mint in Bern was known as the Vreneli was minted between 1897 and 1936 on a regular basis. The series continued post-World War II with issues in 1947 and 1949, but those coins were not legal tender. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia Gold Coins from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Vreneli was the informal name given to the gold Franc denominations from the Swiss Mint in Bern. The series was produced with 10, 20, and 100 Francs denominations as the primary options. Each one has .900 gold content and the same designs for the obverse and reverse across the various denominations. The 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia Gold Coins are based on the Francs gold coin denomination used by various European nations during the era of the Latin Monetary Union.
Obverse
For the obverse design field, 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia Gold Coins come with the Swiss Coat of Arms. The shield has a background of vertical lines with the cross of Switzerland in the center. An ornate wreath features in the background behind the shield with a date mark below the shield and the face value split on either side of the shield. The numeric value is on the left with the denomination abbreviation of FR on the right.
Reverse
In the reverse design element, 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia Gold Coins feature the female personification of Switzerland. Not all Swiss Franc Gold coins ever produced have this design, just those issued from 1897 to 1936. The female personification of Switzerland wears her braided her back behind her figure which is depicted in left-profile relief as the mighty peaks of the Swiss Alps tower toward the sky in the background field.
History
Most of the coins available to you in this series are circulated coins from the 20 Francs Swiss Helvetia Gold collection. The coins produced between 1897 and 1936 were legal tender and made it into circulation for extended periods of time. The 1947 and 1949 coins were restrikes with no legal tender status.
