Designed by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, the obverse was inspired by the ancient Greco-Roman sculpture Crouching Venus. It features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a pearl-studded diadem inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” You’ll also find the year of issue on this side.
Modeled after the Great Seal of the United States, the reverse features a heraldic eagle with a striped shield on its breast. Thirteen stars rest above to represent the original colonies. The denomination and mintmark are inscribed.
After the boom of the California Gold Rush in the late 1840s, the US Treasury was receiving such an unprecedented amount of gold that the plans for a $1 gold piece were expanded to include the $20 Double Eagle. It became America’s largest circulating gold coin and remains popular among collectors. Liberty Head Double Eagles were minted in three slight variations between 1849 and 1907 in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver.

"
Last year my wife and I did some prospecting on Woods Creek in California - just down the road from Columa where the gold rush started. We bought a couple of these historic coins from Provident - we specifically requested the San Francisco Mint and they delivered! Nice to hold in our hand a piece of gold that was probably panned out of a similar creek in the mother lode region, and ended up at the SF Mint!"

"
Fantastic way to aquire gold bullion with a little bit of history attatched. Even though cleaned, still well worth the few extra dollars over the price of plain bullion. (In my opinion).
Very satisfied with the condition & the price. A++" |

"
These are beautiful coins and a colorful part of American history. It all started at Sutter Creek along hwy 49 in California's gold country. Gold from the Sierra Nevada was minted into these coins at the SF mint. I requested double eagles from SF and Provident delivered! Thank you! My order was promptly filled and shipped, and the price can't be beat."

"
I usually don't leave reviews but I was extremely happy with the quality of the double eagles Provident sent me...not to mention the absolute lowest price on the market....although I'm not crazy about the check holding period (a little long)...Provident has surely earned my trust!"
