Obverse

The $20 Liberty, also known as the $20 Coronet type, features a female image of Liberty on the obverse. She is wearing a crown with the inscription “LIBERTY” displayed prominently. Thirteen stars (to honor the thirteen original American colonies) are placed at the periphery. The coin’s date appears at the bottom.

Reverse

Like many 19th- and early 20th-century coins, the $20 Liberty reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings. The bird is positioned behind a shield and is clutching both arrows and an olive branch. This symbolized America’s desire for peace and ability to defend itself in military conflict. A halo of thirteen stars, again symbolizing the original colonies, hovers above the eagle’s head. The legends “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” appear towards the edge.

About the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin

The $20 Double Eagle was the largest circulating American gold coin. It was first introduced in 1850 in direct response to the California Gold Rush, as the mint was receiving massive shipments of bullion from the West. Double Eagles soon became one of the world’s most popular gold coins; they enjoyed tremendous demand both in the United States and abroad.

Most Liberty Double Eagles are seen in worn condition; the typical specimen only grades Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated. Mint State specimens are scarce and Choice Uncirculated coins like this are much more difficult to source. These certified MS63 pieces display clean fields, strong luster, no signs of wear, and solid eye appeal.

The coins in this category will have a random year of issue depending on our current inventory.
