The Gold Double Eagle coin was introduced by the United States Mint as a direct result of the influx of gold into the Treasury Department following the California Gold Rush in the same year. Thought it was not available as long as the other denominations, it nonetheless went through some variations in its design. Right now, Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from Provident Metals.
Please keep in mind that you may receive several coins with the same date marks in this listing.
Each of the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in this listing has a Very Fine condition. Coins with a VF condition listing have light to medium wear visible on certain elements of the coin, but still boast major features that all have sharp visuals.
On the obverse of the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This iconic 19th-century design features Liberty wearing a coronet crown with the word Liberty inscribed on it. You will also notice 13 stars around her head with the date mark engraved at the bottom of the design field.
The reverse side of $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins includes the modified Great Seal of the United States of America. It includes the American bald eagle with the heraldic shield of the United States. Additional inscriptions include United States of America and the face value of the coin.
The 1849 introduction of the Gold Double Eagle gave the circulation Gold Eagle Series its largest denomination and its final coin. The series already had the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. With a design on both sides from James B. Longacre, adjustments were made to the reverse elements over the course of time. From 1849 to 1866, the coins had no motto and a face value marked as Twenty D. on the reverse. In 1866, the national motto of In God We Trust was added to the reverse. Finally, in 1877, the face value was switched to Twenty Dollars.
